Beautiful Manners in Islam: Prioritize Those Closest to You

Our mother ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها) once asked the Prophet ﷺ:

"O Messenger of Allah! I have two neighbors. Which of them should I give a gift to?"

And the Prophet ﷺ replied:

“To the one whose door is closer to you.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2595]

SubḥānAllāh. How profound, yet how simple.

Islam teaches us not just generosity—but considerate generosity. A neighbor isn't just someone next door; they are someone whom Islam gives rights to, someone whose needs, feelings, and presence matter.

Closeness brings interaction. Interaction brings opportunity. And opportunity brings responsibility.

That little act of kindness—sharing food, offering help, giving a gift—can build love, protect hearts, and strengthen the Ummah… one neighbor at a time.

Let’s not ignore those who live closest to us. Start with the door nearest to yours.

Today, knock on your neighbor’s door and bring a smile — even a small gift can carry a mountain of reward.
