Four Types of People in Spending Wealth and Knowledge — A Powerful Lesson from Ibn Kathir
People are of different categories:
The first group are the believers who spend their wealth day and night, in the path of Allah, seeking His pleasure. They do not withhold knowledge—they spend their wealth, and they spend their knowledge. These people are in the best of ranks and the most excellent of stations.
The second group are those who deny both (i.e., wealth and knowledge). They are miserly with their knowledge and miserly with their wealth. These are in the worst of ranks.
The third group are those who spend their wealth to show off to people, and use their knowledge to show off, and even their courage is for show. They do not intend the Face of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. These are in the most evil of ranks, and we seek refuge in Allah! Because their deeds are not for Allah, and their spending is not for Allah.
The fourth group, who are safe from all this, are the saved ones. They spend their wealth in the path of Allah, and they spend their knowledge for the sake of Allah, and they use their courage and whatever Allah has given them in His path. Their actions are for Allah, and they walk upon the path Allah has laid down for His servants. These are in the best of ranks and the most excellent of stations.
