From Tazkiyah to Bidah: The Dangerous Slippery Slope of Sufism

From Tazkiyah to Bidah: The Dangerous Slippery Slope of Sufism

It starts with a sincere heart.

A yearning for closeness to Allah.

A desire for purification of the soul — tazkiyah an-nafs.

A hunger for spirituality, connection, and sincerity in worship.

But too often… it ends in bid‘ah.

Sufism claims to be the path of love and purification.

But step by step — slowly, quietly — it leads many down a path the Prophet (peace be upon him) never walked.

At first:

— A sheikh gives dhikr routines with no basis in Sunnah.

— You’re told to “leave the dry scholars” and “follow the path of taste and light.”

— Qur’an and Sunnah become replaced by dreams, visions, and spiritual feelings.

Then:

— You begin seeking barakah from graves.

— You chant names of Allah in invented ways.

— You hear claims that “you must have a murshid to reach Allah.”

— And soon, you’re calling on dead saints — instead of the Ever-Living Lord of the worlds.

Many of the Sufis who turned away from the Book and Sunnah fell into shirk and bid‘ah, all while thinking they were getting closer to Allah.

Let that sink in.

What began as sincerity…

Ended in innovation.

What began as remembrance…

Ended in deviation.

Because Islam already has a path to purification:

— The path of the Qur’an.

— The path of the Sunnah.

— The path of the noble Salaf of this Ummah — not the path of dreams, dances, and dhikr circles with no proof.

Real tazkiyah comes from revelation, not innovation.

Protect your soul. Don’t let your love for spirituality become a weapon of Shayṭān.

Follow the way of the Salaf — where spirituality is rooted in authenticity, and love of Allah is defined by obedience to His Messenger (peace be upon him).
