How to Calculate and Pay Zakah on Monthly Salaries
Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:
I work in the Kingdom (of Saudi Arabia), and every month I receive my salary. So when a full lunar year passes, how do I pay the Zakāh? Should I pay it for the first month on which a full year has passed, or for the entire salary of the whole year — from the first month to the last month in which I am giving the Zakāh?
Shaykh Ibn Baz Answer:
You should pay Zakāh on each salary once a full (Hijri) year has passed on it. So the salary of the first month should be paid first, then the second month likewise, then the third, and so on. Every salary on which one full year has passed becomes liable for Zakāh.
However, if you wish to advance the Zakāh and pay it for the later months along with the first month’s Zakāh, there is no harm in doing so. It is permissible to pay Zakāh in advance, but you are not obligated to do so until each salary completes its own full year.
