Ruling on Jumah When Eid Falls on a Friday: Should You Pray Both?

Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:

If ʿĪd falls on a Friday, and I have already prayed the ʿĪd prayer, is it better to still pray Jumuʿah or to pray Ẓuhr instead?

Shaykh Ibn Baaz Answer:

It is better to perform the Jumuʿah prayer, because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to pray both Jumuʿah and ʿĪd when they occurred on the same day. However, he granted a concession to the people: whoever attended the ʿĪd prayer, they had the choice—if they wished, they could attend Jumuʿah, and if they wished, they could pray Ẓuhr instead.

The Prophet ﷺ himself would combine both prayers. So, whoever performs Jumuʿah with the congregation, it is better, as it allows him to attain the virtue of Jumuʿah and benefit from the khutbah (sermon).

However, if one prays Ẓuhr and does not attend Jumuʿah on the day of ʿĪd because he already prayed the ʿĪd prayer, then that is also permissible according to the soundest opinion, as this concession is established in the Sunnah from the Prophet ﷺ.

Yet, if a person attends and performs Jumuʿah, that is better, due to the immense good and virtue involved. The Prophet ﷺ used to perform both prayers when they coincided.

As al-Nuʿmān (ibn Bashīr) narrated in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, he said:

“The Prophet ﷺ used to recite Sūrat al-Aʿlā and Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah in the Jumuʿah prayer. Similarly, he would recite them in the ʿĪd prayer. Sometimes both prayers would occur on the same day, and he would recite them in both prayers — in the ʿĪd prayer and in the Jumuʿah prayer.”

Reported by Muslim in his Ṣaḥīḥ.
