Ruling on Performing Obligatory Prayers (Salah) While Seated on a Bus

Question to Shaykh ‘Arafāt ibn Ḥasan:

This is a question about praying while travelling: may we perform the prayer while seated on the bus?

Shaykh Shaykh ‘Arafāt ibn Ḥasan:

It is not permissible to perform an obligatory prayer while sitting down (if you are able to stand). Therefore, if there is sufficient time to delay the prayer and combine it with the next prayer, that is preferable. For example, you might say, “If we arrive home after [the entrance of] ‘Aṣr, we will combine Ẓuhr with ‘Aṣr and thus delay Ẓuhr until ‘Aṣr,” — there is no problem in that.

However, if the prayer time is about to run out and the taxi or bus driver refuses to stop—and the prayer (such as Fajr when its time is nearly over) cannot be postponed (i.e. cannot be combined with the next prayer)—then, after the driver’s refusal, it is permissible to pray while seated.
