The Danger of Party Spirit in Islam: Why True Success Lies Only with the Party of Allah

Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:

What do you advise the callers to Islam regarding their stance toward the innovators? Also, could you kindly give a special piece of advice to the youth who are being influenced by joining these so-called "religious" parties?

Shaykh Ibn Baaz Answer:

We advise all our brothers to call to Allah ﷻ with wisdom, good preaching, and to debate in the best manner, as Allah commanded — with all people, including the innovators if they openly show their innovation.

They must denounce them — whether they are from the Shia or others.

Any innovation a believer sees, he must reject it as much as he is able, using the correct Islamic ways.

Innovation means:

Something people invented in the religion, falsely attaching it to Islam, while it has no basis in it — as the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever introduces into this affair of ours (Islam) that which is not from it — it is rejected."
And he ﷺ also said:
"Whoever does an action that is not in accordance with our matter (religion) — it is rejected."

Among the examples of innovations are:

  • The innovation of Rafḍ (Shia extremism),

  • The innovation of Iʿtizāl (Muʿtazilite belief),

  • The innovation of Irjāʾ (Murji’ah belief),

  • The innovation of the Khawārij (extremists who rebelled),

  • The innovation of celebrating birthdays (Mawlid),

  • The innovation of building upon graves and making mosques over them,

  • and many others.

It is obligatory to advise those who fall into these innovations, guide them toward goodness, and denounce what they invented — using clear evidences from the Qur’an and Sunnah.

They must be taught what they are ignorant of, with kindness, soft speech, and clear, strong proofs — in the hope they will accept the truth.

As for joining newly invented parties,

it is obligatory to abandon them.

Everyone must unite upon the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ.They must work together upon this — sincerely and truthfully.

By doing this, they will be among the Party of Allah (Ḥizbullāh), about whom Allah said at the end of Sūrah al-Mujādilah:

"Indeed, the Party of Allah — they are the successful ones." (Al-Mujādilah, 22)

Allah described their great qualities, saying:

"You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger..." (Al-Mujādilah, 22)

Among the beautiful traits of the Party of Allah is what Allah mentioned in Sūrah adh-Dhāriyāt:

"Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and springs, taking whatever their Lord has given them.Indeed, they were before that doers of good. They used to sleep but little of the night, and in the hours before dawn, they would seek forgiveness, and in their wealth, there was a known right for the beggar and the deprived."(Adh-Dhāriyāt, 15–19)

These are the qualities of the true Party of Allah:

  • They do not cling to anything other than the Book of Allah and the Sunnah.

  • They call to it.

  • They follow the path of the Salaf of this Ummah — the companions (ṣaḥābah) and their followers in goodness.

They advise all groups, all parties, and all associations, calling them to:

  • Stick firmly to the Qur’an and Sunnah.

  • Present any disagreement to the Qur’an and Sunnah for judgment.

  • Accept whatever agrees with them (or either of them) — for that is the truth.

  • Abandon whatever opposes them — for that is falsehood.

There is no difference between groups like:

  • The Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwān al-Muslimīn),

  • Ansār as-Sunnah groups,

  • The Sharʿiyyah Association,

  • The Tableeghi Jama’at,

  • or any other Islamic-labelled associations or parties.

The goal must be unity upon the truth,

one united group,

following the footsteps of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah,

who are the true Party of Allah,

the true supporters of His religion,

the true callers to His path.

It is not permissible to blindly fanatically support any group, any association, or any party when they contradict the pure, blessed Islamic legislation.
