The Day Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) Fought the Khawarij: The Most Pious-Looking People on Earth

They prayed more than anyone.

They fasted like no other.

They recited the Qur’an beautifully — so much so that ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him):

“Your prayers will seem nothing compared to their prayers, and your fasting will seem nothing compared to their fasting.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]

But despite all that…

ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib — the cousin of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and one of the most knowledgeable of the Companions — fought them.

Why?

Because their piety was a disguise.

Their hearts were poisoned by extremism.

They declared the blood of Muslims to be ḥalāl, rebelled against the legitimate Muslim ruler, and distorted the meanings of the Qur’an.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned about them long before:

“They will recite the Qur’an but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass out of Islam like an arrow passes through the prey.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Muslim]

And he commanded:

“If I live to see them, I will kill them like the killing of ʿĀd.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]

At Nahrawān, ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) did just that.

Because no matter how “religious” a person looks, if he rebels against the Muslim leader, spills Muslim blood, and makes takfīr on the Ummah — he is not upon the Sunnah.

Salafiyyah teaches us to be firm on the Sunnah, not fooled by appearances.

Reject modern-day Khawārij — whether they wear turbans or tactical gear.

Return to the Manhaj of the Prophet and his Companions.
