The Falsehood of "786" — A Fabricated Practice with No Basis in Islam
Many Muslims write 786 thinking it “represents” Bismillāh-ir-Raḥmān-ir-Raḥīm.
But let’s ask honestly:
Did the Prophet (peace be upon him) use 786?
Did the Companions ever replace the Basmalah with numbers?
Did any of the Salaf approve of it?
No.
In fact, this numerology:
— Has roots in Hindu mysticism and Abjad systems, not Islam
— Is based on assigning numbers to Arabic letters, a concept alien to the Qur’an and Sunnah
— Has led to Muslims writing 786 instead of the beautiful, blessed words of the Basmalah
Replacing the words of Allah with numbers is not just wrong — it’s a form of innovation (bidʿah), and it leads to misguidance.
Allah says:
“Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an so that you may understand.”
(Qur’an 43:3)
So why abandon clear, perfect Arabic revelation… for man-made numerology?
Let us leave behind cultural baggage and return to pure Islam — as taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) and understood by the Salaf.
Islam is not mysticism. Not numbers. Not symbols.
It is Qur’an, Sunnah, and the Straight Path.
