The Fitnah of Overzealousness: Between Sincerity and Misguidance

Not every sincere person is rightly guided.

And not every passionate act brings you closer to Allah.

The Prophet Muḥammad (peace be upon him) warned us about a group who would:

“Recite the Qur’an, but it will not go beyond their throats.”
“They will kill the people of Islam and leave the people of idol-worship.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Muslim]

These were not drunkards.

They were not fornicators.

They were outwardly religious — but inwardly poisoned by extremism.

They were the Khawārij — people of excessive zeal, misplaced judgment, and shallow understanding.

  • They declared righteous Muslims as disbelievers.

  • They rebelled against Muslim rulers.

  • They made bloodshed a shortcut to Jannah.

And in doing so, they waged war against the Ummah — in the name of Islam.

Sincerity is not enough.

ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“How many are those who intend good — but never reach it.”

Overzealousness without knowledge leads to destruction.

Islam is a religion of balance:

— Between justice and mercy.

— Between courage and wisdom.

— Between action and understanding.

So beware of the Khawārij mindset.

Cling to the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Companions.

Because only their path is safe from extremism — and safe from Hell.
