The Hadith: “They Recite the Quran — But It Doesn’t Go Beyond Their Throats”
They memorized the Qur’an.
They recited it beautifully.
They fasted in the day and prayed all night.
But the Prophet Muḥammad (peace be upon him) said:
“They will recite the Qur’an but it will not go beyond their throats.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Muslim]
Why such a harsh warning?
Because the Khawārij used the Qur’an against the very people the Qur’an was revealed to guide — the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
They had knowledge on their tongues, but no understanding in their hearts.
They quoted āyāt of mercy — but spread bloodshed.
They chanted slogans of tawḥīd — but rebelled against the Muslim rulers and slaughtered believers.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) called them:
“Dogs of the Hellfire.”
[Sunan Ibn Mājah 173 – Authentic]
This is a warning for our times.
Not everyone who speaks with the Qur’an is rightly guided.
Not everyone who fasts and prays is upon the truth.
True guidance is not in how much Qur’an you recite, but whether you understand and apply it like the Salaf did.
Reject modern-day Khawārij: those who declare Muslims disbelievers, fight Muslim armies, and create chaos in the name of Islam.
Return to the path of balance — the way of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Companions.
