The Prophet ﷺ Never Made Takfir of the Sahabah — But the Khawarij Did
In the harshest of times — when some Companions made mistakes in battle, in judgment, in personal matters — the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ never made takfīr upon them.
Not once.
He never said: “You are out of Islām.”
He never declared a Ṣaḥābī to be a disbeliever.
Even when Ḥātib ibn Abī Baltaʿah (رضي الله عنه) committed a major mistake, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“He participated in Badr! And how do you know, perhaps Allah has looked at the people of Badr and said: 'Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you.'”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 3007]
The Prophet ﷺ built his Ummah on mercy, wisdom, and forgiveness — not takfīr.
But the Khawārij?
They reviled ʿUthmān and ʿAlī (رضي الله عنهما).
They fought the very companions who memorized the Qur’an and led the Muslims.
They declared the best of the Ummah to be disbelievers.
Their legacy?
Swords against the righteous.
Qur’an on their tongues — but not in their hearts.
When someone today dares to make takfīr of scholars, students of knowledge, or Muslim rulers — know this: They walk the path of the Khawārij, not the Sunnah.
Salafiyyah teaches:
Mercy over harshness
Proof before judgment
Loyalty to the Jamāʿah
Takfīr only with clear, undeniable evidence — as taught by the Salaf
May Allah protect us from the hearts of the Khawārij and grant us the heart of the Prophet ﷺ.
