The Quranic and Prophetic Proofs for the Statement of Tawhid — La Ilaha Illallah
Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:
As for the questioner’s statement: “You call to tawḥīd — so what is your evidence for the statement of tawḥīd (i.e., Lā ilāha illā Allāh)? From where is it derived?”
Shaykh Ibn Baaz Answer:
The answer is that there are many evidences for this in the Book of Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, and in the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ.
Tawḥīd means: singling out Allāh — meaning the belief that He is One, without any partner.
Among the verses that indicate this are His statement, the Most High:
"And I did not create the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me."
[Surah adh-Dhāriyāt, 51:56]
And His statement, the Most High:
"And We did not send any messenger before you except that We revealed to him that there is no deity worthy of worship except Me, so worship Me."
[Surah al-Anbiyā’, 21:25]
And there are many other verses with this meaning.
As for the ḥadīths, among them is what is authentically reported in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allāh be pleased with them both), that the Prophet ﷺ said to Muʿādh (may Allāh be pleased with him) when he sent him to Yemen:
"Call them to the tawḥīd of Allāh" — in these words.
It was narrated by al-Bukhārī in his Ṣaḥīḥ.
And in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, from Ṭāriq ibn Ashyam al-Ashjaʿī (may Allāh be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ that he said:
"Whoever affirms the oneness of Allāh and disbelieves in what is worshipped besides Allāh, then his wealth and blood become inviolable, and his reckoning is with Allāh."
He explicitly said, "affirms the oneness of Allāh", which indicates that this is the meaning of Lā ilāha illā Allāh.
Also, from what is authentically reported in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allāh be pleased with them both), that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Islam is built upon five: that one affirms the oneness of Allāh…" — this is the wording of the ḥadīth.
And this is an explanation of his ﷺ statement in another narration:
"Islam is built upon five: the testimony that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allāh, and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh…" — and the ḥadīth continues.
And there are many ḥadīths with this same meaning.
And Allāh is the one who grants success.
