The Three Keys to Eternal Success: Taqwa, Tawassul through Obedience, and Jihad in Allah’s Cause
Allah the Most High says:
“O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means [of nearness] to Him and strive in His cause that you may succeed.”
(Sūrat al-Māʾidah, 5:35)
All goodness is gathered in these three phrases:
“Fear Allah,” “seek the means to Him,” and “strive in His cause.”
If the Muslims fear their Lord, abandon what He has forbidden, seek the means to Him, draw near to Him through obedience and fulfilling His rights, and strive against His enemies—then happiness is achieved for them.
They will have fulfilled what is upon them and striven against the enemies of Allah to bring them into the religion of Allah and guide them to the truth.
These are the causes of all happiness:
That the servant carries out what Allah has made obligatory upon him.
This is taqwā (fear and consciousness of Allah)—that one does what Allah has commanded and avoids what He has forbidden.
This is taqwā, this is īmān (faith), this is the entirety of hudā (guidance).
So when Allah combines taqwā and action, the meaning is: fearing the prohibitions and acting upon what Allah has made obligatory.
His saying “fear Allah” means: abandon His prohibitions, revere Him, and fear Him.
“Seek the means to Him” means: fulfill His rights; the wasīlah (means) is nearness to Him through obedience.
So the meaning is: fulfill His obligations, avoid His prohibitions, and strive against His enemies.
This is the entire religion:
Fulfilling the obligations,
Avoiding the prohibitions,
And striving against the enemies.
Seeking the wasīlah also includes all acts of nearness and obedience.
The greatest of these is that which Allah has made obligatory upon the servant.
Its perfection includes voluntary acts that Allah has legislated for His servants.
This is what is required of all the believers, wherever they are:
That they fear Allah by doing what He has made obligatory,
Abstain from what He has prohibited,
And strive in His cause to the best of their ability.
Jihād is of many types:
— It can be with speech
— It can be with action
— It can be with the sword
Calling to Allah is jihād in His cause.
Carrying weapons and fighting the enemies is jihād in His cause.
Commanding the good and forbidding the evil is jihād in His cause.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
