The Truth About Reciting Quran for the Dead: A Warning Against Innovation
Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:
"Reading the Qur'an on the dead after his death is an innovation."
[Al-Fatawaa Al-Kubraa, Vol. 5, Pg. 363]
This statement is not a personal opinion, but a firm scholarly stance based on clear evidences from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Ask yourself honestly: Did the Prophet ﷺ ever gather people to recite Qur’an for the dead? Did the Sahabah do it? Did the righteous Salaf do it?
If none of them did it…
Then why should we?
Bid’ah (Innovation) in religion, even if beautified and widely practiced, remains a deviation from the pure path of the Messenger ﷺ.
Islam is complete. It does not need additions. The Messenger ﷺ said:
“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours that which is not from it, it is rejected.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)
Instead of innovating, let’s do what is proven to benefit the deceased:
– Sincere duʿā for them
– Giving charity on their behalf
– Performing ḥajj or ʿumrah for them
– Fulfilling their vows
Don’t let emotions lead you to invented acts. Let the Sunnah guide your love for the deceased.
Share this truth. Don’t stay silent when bid’ah is normalized.
