When Did Honeymoons Become a Sunnah?

When Did Honeymoons Become a Sunnah?

When Did Honeymoons Become a Sunnah?

Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn رحمه الله said:

“Honeymoons are more evil than expensive wedding parties. It is an imitation of disbelievers.”
Fatāwā al-Marʾah, 11/193

Let that sink in.

Today’s weddings aren’t just celebrations — they’ve become theatrical productions, where the couple competes for attention, and the “honeymoon” is the final act of extravagance.

But where is this in the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him)?

Where is this in the marriages of the Ṣaḥābah?

Where is this among the Salaf?

The concept of “honeymoons” — luxury getaways post-marriage — has no basis in Islam.

It was born in the West. It is rooted in imitation of non-Muslim customs — a trend now normalized among Muslims.

And sadly, it's become a means for:

Flaunting wealth

Free-mixing and shameless dress

Prioritizing pleasure over piety

Posting private life for the world to see

But Islām never taught that a marriage needs to start with a vacation.

It taught that it must start with taqwā, modesty, and gratitude.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) consummated his marriages without a parade.

He began his homes with blessings, not travel plans.

Let’s stop following the glitter of others and return to the light of the Sunnah.

A blessed marriage isn’t one that begins with a plane ticket — but one that begins with Barakah, Qur’an, duʿāʾ, and humility.

May Allāh protect us from blindly following the ways of those who don’t believe.
