When Eid Falls on Friday: Does It Replace Jumah?
Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:
If ʿEid falls on a Friday, does the ʿEid prayer suffice in place of the Jumuʿah prayer? And if they do pray on Friday, does the Jumuʿah prayer count as an expiation until the following week?
Shaykh Ibn Baaz Answer:
If ʿEid falls on a Friday, the Prophet ﷺ clarified that whoever prays the ʿEid prayer, it suffices for him in place of the Jumuʿah prayer, and he may instead pray Ẓuhr. So if a person performs the ʿEid prayer with the people, the imāms of the central mosques (jāmiʿ) are still required to establish the Jumuʿah prayer and lead it for those who attend. As for the one who does not attend and has already prayed ʿEid, then he must pray Ẓuhr at home or with some of his brothers, as the Prophet ﷺ instructed.
As for Jumuʿah, Allah has made it an expiation — if a person purifies himself at home, comes to the masjid, prays what Allah has written for him, attends the khuṭbah, listens attentively, does not separate between two people, and does not harm anyone — then his Jumuʿah will be an expiation for what is between it and the next Jumuʿah, plus an extra three days, because a good deed is rewarded tenfold.
However, this does not mean that it becomes an expiation which allows him to neglect the prayers that follow or ignore his obligations. No — rather, he must fulfill the responsibilities upon him, fear Allah, and uphold his duties at all times — including the prayers and beyond. Since a person is always subject to slips and sins, this Jumuʿah acts as an expiation for the minor sins that may occur from him.
As for the obligations — he must fulfill them. Some ignorant people say, “Jumuʿah is enough for me,” and they neglect the other prayers… This is a great evil, disbelief, and misguidance. We ask Allah for well-being.
Expiation — just like repentance is an expiation, and just like the five daily prayers are expiation — does not mean that a person who prays Jumuʿah can neglect the other prayers and say: “The next Jumuʿah will make up for it.” Nor does it mean he can ignore other rights, stop enjoining good and forbidding evil, be undutiful to his parents, sever ties of kinship, bear false witness, or make false claims — thinking that Jumuʿah will expiate all of that.
No! This is great ignorance and deep misguidance. We seek refuge with Allah.
