The Killing of Uthman – A Door the Khawarij Broke and the Ummah Still Suffers

The murder of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (رضي الله عنه) wasn't just a political tragedy.

It was a turning point in Islamic history—the day the Khawārij ideology was unleashed upon the Ummah.

The Prophet ﷺ warned us ahead of time:

“O Uthman, it may be that Allah will clothe you with a shirt (i.e., grant you leadership), and if they try to make you take it off, do not remove it for them.”
— Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3705

ʿUthmān was:

  • The rightful Caliph chosen by the Ṣaḥābah

  • A modest, devout, generous Muslim

  • The Standardizer and distributor of the Qur’ān (unified the Qur'an across the Ummah)

Yet he was accused, slandered, and finally murdered in his own home… while reading the Qur’an.

And who led this rebellion?

A mob inspired by takfīr,

Fueled by rumors,

Ignited by those who claimed to want justice—but in truth, they opened the gates of chaos.

It was the spiritual birth of Khawārijism:

  • No patience.

  • No respect for leadership.

  • No returning to knowledge.

    Just emotion, rage, and rebellion.

The killing of ʿUthmān was the beginning of every tribulation that came afterward.

From that day:

  • The Ummah was split

  • Blood was spilled

  • Rebellion became a “virtue” in the eyes of the deluded

But the Salaf never saw rebellion as islāḥ (reform).

They saw it for what it was: a door that, once opened, is hard to close.

Lessons from the Fitnah of ʿUthmān:

  • Never let emotion override the Sunnah

  • Justice cannot be achieved by breaking the Jamāʿah

  • Real reform is through knowledge, patience, and Tawḥīd

  • The path of the Khawārij always leads to bloodshed

O seeker of truth:

The Prophet ﷺ warned us, the Sahābah tried to stop it, and history bears witness—

Khawārijism began with the killing of ʿUthmān, and every fire since was lit by that first spark.
