The Sword of Ali (رضي الله عنه) at Nahrawan: Justice, Not Oppression

The Sword of Ali (رضي الله عنه) at Nahrawan: Justice, Not Oppression

He was the cousin of the Prophet ﷺ.

He was raised in the house of revelation.

He was the fourth Rightly Guided Caliph — a man of taqwā, courage, and wisdom.

Yet ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (رضي الله عنه) was forced to raise his sword…

Not against the Romans.

Not against the Persians.

But against a deviant sect from within the Ummah — the Khawārij.

They fasted.

They prayed.

They recited the Qur’an day and night.

But they broke away from the Jamāʿah.

They called ʿAlī and other noble Companions kuffār.

They slaughtered innocent Muslims — in the name of "judging by the Qur’an."

At Nahrawān, ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه) stood for the truth.

He didn’t fight them out of power or pride.

He fought them to protect the Ummah from extremism.

To uphold the truth and crush falsehood — just as the Prophet ﷺ foretold:

“A group will emerge who will recite the Qur’an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will kill the people of Islam and spare the idol worshippers. They will pass through Islam like an arrow passes through its prey. If I live to see them, I will surely kill them like the killing of ʿĀd.”

— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim

Nahrawān was not oppression — it was justice.

It was the defense of the Sunnah against extremism.

Today, we must do the same — not with weapons, but with knowledge, wisdom, and daʿwah.

Expose the lies of the modern Khawārij.

Stand firm upon the Salafi Manhaj.

And remember: Truth is not with those who scream the loudest — but those who follow the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions.
