Ibn Abbas Debates the Khawarij – A Lesson in Clarity
When 6,000 Khawārij broke away from the Ummah during the time of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him), claiming to be “the only true Muslims,” ʿAlī didn’t rush to fight them.
Instead, he sent ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās — the cousin of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and one of the most knowledgeable of the Companions — to debate them with the Qur'an and Sunnah.
Ibn ʿAbbās entered their camp alone.
He didn’t insult.
He didn’t scream.
He didn’t fight.
He asked questions.
He clarified doubts.
He brought proofs.
And the result?
2,000 of them repented and returned to the fold of Ahl al-Sunnah.
[Reported by Imām Aḥmad in al-Musnad, and others]
The Khawārij were driven by emotion and suspicion.
But Ibn ʿAbbās used ʿilm, ḥikmah, and the understanding of the Salaf to expose their falsehood.
Lessons for us today:
— Knowledge defeats extremism.
— Clarity dissolves confusion.
— The Qur’an and Sunnah, understood as the Salaf understood, is the light that burns away the darkness of the Khawārij.
O seeker of truth!
Don’t be fooled by passionate slogans and self-righteous anger.
Be like Ibn ʿAbbās — call to clarity, not chaos.
