Patience at the First Strike

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) — one of the greatest doctors of the heart — taught us something incredibly deep:
When a calamity suddenly strikes... it feels like a storm that shakes your very soul. It feels unbearable. It feels as if the world has collapsed.
But he said:
"The sudden surprises of a calamity has a magnitude that shakes the heart. If he is patient at the first shock (stroke of a calamity), its pressure will be broken and its intensity will weaken, and it will be (made) easy for him to continue being patient."
Uddat-us-Sābireen (1/80)
If you are patient at that very first moment of shock, the mountain of pain will begin to crumble. The weight will lighten. The storm will weaken. And the road ahead will open for patience to become easier.
SubhānAllāh! How merciful is our Lord! He does not ask for superhuman strength... He simply asks for one moment of endurance when the heart breaks. And after that, He carries us through the hardship.
Dear brothers and sisters, when calamity strikes, take a deep breath, lower your head to the ground in sujood, and say with all your brokenness:
"Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn."
"Truly, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return." [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:156]
That first moment of patience could be the difference between despair and triumph. That first moment of patience could be the moment that earns you Paradise.
Hold tight, even if by a thread. Allah sees you. Allah loves you. Allah is near.
Patience is beautiful — especially at the first strike.
