The Ruling on Calling the Adhān and Iqāmah at the Time of Burial: A Clear Refutation of an Unfounded Innovation

Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:

What is the ruling on giving the adhān and the iqāmah at the gravesite when the deceased is being placed into the grave?

Shaykh Ibn Baaz Answer:

There is no doubt that this practice is an innovation (bid‘ah) — something which Allah has not authorized in any way whatsoever. It has no basis in the actions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) or in the actions of his noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them all).

And all goodness lies in following them and walking in their path, just as Allah the Exalted said:

"And the foremost to embrace Islam of the Muhājirīn and the Anṣār and those who follow them in goodness — Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him..."Surah al-Tawbah (9:100)

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours (i.e., Islam) something which is not from it — it will be rejected.”(Reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim)

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever does an act that is not in accordance with our matter (i.e., our religion), it will be rejected.”

And he ﷺ also said:

“The worst of matters are those that are newly introduced, and every innovation is misguidance.”(Reported by Muslim in his Ṣaḥīḥ from the narration of Jābir [may Allah be pleased with him])

And may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muḥammad, his family, and his companions.
