The Sanctity of the Sacred Months — Their Status, Rulings, and Scholarly Views
Shaykh Ibn Baz:
As Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said in Sūrah al-Baqarah:
"They ask you about fighting in the Sacred Month. Say, fighting therein is a grave matter."
— [al-Baqarah 2:217]
Allah clearly explained that fighting during the Sacred Months is considered fighting, and it is a serious and grave matter. However, even more severe and greater than that is expelling the inhabitants of the Sacred Mosque and unlawfully taking lives. We ask Allah for well-being. And also preventing others from the path of Allah.
The point is: a group of scholars held the view that the sanctity of these months remains intact, and that fighting in them is forbidden. They said it is obligatory to respect and venerate them just as Allah, Glorified and Exalted, and His Messenger venerated them.
The majority of scholars, however, were of the opinion that their prohibition has been abrogated. This is a well-known difference of opinion among the scholars.
The apparent meaning of the Islamic evidences supports the view that their sanctity remains. However, these months are not to be specified with particular acts of worship unless there is evidence for that—whether it is Rajab or any other month.
The Sacred Months are:
Rajab, Dhul-Qaʿdah, Dhul-Ḥijjah, and Muḥarram.
Three of them are consecutive: Dhul-Qaʿdah, Dhul-Ḥijjah, and Muḥarram.
And one is separate: Rajab, which falls between Jumādā al-Ākhirah and Shaʿbān.
Further discussion, if Allah wills, will come regarding the rulings of ʿUmrah, as was mentioned in the upcoming commentary, if Allah wills.
And I ask Allah to grant everyone increased beneficial knowledge and righteous action.
