The True Path of the Student of Knowledge: Seeking, Teaching, Calling, and Reforming

Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:

It is noticed that some students focus heavily on seeking knowledge and neglect the side of calling others to Allah. Could you kindly advise our brothers on this matter?

Shaykh Ibn Baaz Answer:

The student of knowledge must combine both: between seeking knowledge and between calling to Allah. He must combine knowledge with action, and combine it with reforming between people and giving sincere advice. He should not stop at just one thing. Rather, he must do according to his ability, in a way that does not distract him from his obligations.

He is a seeker of knowledge, and at the same time a caller to Allah. He is an adviser, a teacher, and a reformer among people, leaving behind good traces and impacts.

A student of knowledge — especially one studying in a College of Sharee'ah (Islamic Law), or the College of Usūl al-Deen (Foundations of Religion), or studying in the circles of the scholars — must have a high ambition. He should not be satisfied with just one thing and leave others. Rather, he should strive in all avenues of good according to his knowledge and ability.

He should be among the reformers, the callers to Allah, the teachers, the advisers, those who command good, and those who forbid evil.

This was exactly the way of the noble Companions and the righteous generations who followed them — they would step into everything that benefited the people. They would not hold back from anything that brought goodness to others.

Even in worldly matters — like medicine, engineering, and other beneficial fields — if they could contribute, they would, according to their ability and knowledge.

However, they would never let less important matters distract them from the most important ones. Rather, they would start with the most important, and then the next, according to their energy — always with sincerity and patience.

And Allah is the Giver of success.
