When FPGAs Win Over ASICs

FPGAs are field-programmable gate arrays — chips whose logic can be reconfigured after manufacture. They are slower and less power-efficient than an equivalent ASIC but can be updated as algorithms change.

This is a simplified process overview for technology leaders, product managers, and founders evaluating ASIC development.


Step 1: Write a Detailed Specification Document Define: performance targets (throughput, latency), power budget (mW or W), physical constraints (die area, package), interface requirements (PCIe, USB, I2C), operating conditions (temperature range), and volume projections. This document is the contract for everything that follows.


Step 2: Choose a Process Node Process node determines minimum transistor size and thus density, speed, and power. Common nodes in 2026: 3nm, 4nm (TSMC N4), 5nm, 7nm, 12nm, 28nm.
