Making Up Missed Sunnah Prayers (Sunan al-Rātibah) — What Remains and What Falls Away According to the Sunnah

Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:

Is it permissible to make up the regular Sunnah prayers after their time has passed, or are they dropped? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.

Shaykh Ibn Baz Answer:

They are dropped if their time passes—except for the Sunnah of Fajr. It is to be made up after the (obligatory) prayer or after sunrise, because the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions made it up along with the Fajr prayer when they overslept during one of their journeys. Also, because the Prophet ﷺ commanded that whoever missed the Sunnah of Fajr should make it up after sunrise. Furthermore, the Prophet ﷺ saw someone making it up after Fajr and did not forbid him from doing so.

Similarly, the Sunnah before Ẓuhr: it is best, if missed, to make it up after the Ẓuhr prayer along with the Sunnah after it, because the Prophet ﷺ, when he missed it, made it up after the prayer. And Allah is the Guardian of success.
