Not Every Surah Quotation is Truth: How Khawarij Twist the Quran
One of the most dangerous traits of the Khawārij — old and new — is their use of the Qur’an to misguide others.
They quote āyāt…
They post sūrah snippets…
They speak in the language of revelation — but with the heart of rebellion.
But quoting the Qur’an doesn’t mean someone is upon the truth.
Even ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه) said about them at Nahrawān:
“A word of truth, by which falsehood is intended.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]
They said: “Judgment is only for Allah!”
An āyah from the Qur’an!
But they used it to declare takfīr on him — a righteous Caliph, a Companion, and the cousin of the Prophet ﷺ.
This is their method:
Use authentic āyāt
Apply them in false contexts
Use them to attack Muslims and justify violence
They twist verses meant for kuffār and apply them to believers.
They ignore the tafsīr of the Salaf, and follow their desires.
The Khawārij are not Qur’an lovers — they are Qur’an abusers.
Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) debated them and refuted them with understanding, not emotion.
The Qur’an is guidance — but only for those who approach it with the Sunnah.
The Salafi protects the Qur’an with the understanding of the Companions.
So beware:
Not every Qur’an post is from a person of truth.
Not every quote is a call to righteousness.
Truth is in understanding — not just reciting.
