The Story of Dhul-Khuwaisirah – The First Khariji in Islamic History
The roots of Khawārij ideology go all the way back to one man who stood up — not against injustice — but against the Prophet ﷺ himself.
His name? Dhul-Khuwaisirah at-Tamīmī.
The Prophet ﷺ was distributing war spoils after the Battle of Ḥunayn. Dhul-Khuwaisirah objected and said:
"Be just, O Muhammad!"
Naʿūdhu billāh. He accused the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of injustice.
The Prophet ﷺ responded:
“Woe to you! Who would be just if I am not?”
“Indeed, from the offspring of this man will come a people who recite the Qur’an but it does not go beyond their throats. They will exit the religion as an arrow passes through the target.”
— Sahih al-Bukhārī (3610), Sahih Muslim (1064)
This moment was the first spark of what would become Khawārijism:
Arrogance disguised as "accountability"
Takfīr disguised as "piety"
Rebellion disguised as "revival"
Dhul-Khuwaisirah didn’t lack worship — he lacked humility, knowledge, and submission to the Prophet ﷺ.
What this teaches us today:
Not everyone who quotes Qur’ān is guided
Criticism without knowledge leads to deviation
The Khawārij began by accusing the Prophet ﷺ — so don’t be shocked when their ideological children accuse the scholars and rulers of today
Be wary of:
Those who speak of “oppression” but spew takfīr
Those who demand “justice” but reject Sunnah
Those who claim to defend Islam while defaming its scholars and tearing apart the Ummah
O seeker of truth:
The Prophet ﷺ didn’t just describe the Khawārij — he named their founder, and warned us their lineage would continue.
Let us recognize the disease early, before it spreads again.
