Envy Doesn’t Just Rot the Heart — It Fuels Injustice and Hatred

Shaykh Rabīʿ al-Madkhalī حفظه الله said:

“Envy leads to transgression, injustice, and aggression.”
Al-Majmūʿ al-Rāʾiq, p. 160

SubḥānAllāh — how many friendships, marriages, communities, and even daʿwah movements have crumbled because of one thing: hasad (envy).

It starts with:

  • "Why him and not me?"

  • "Why is she getting praise?"

  • "Why is his following growing?"

Then comes the whisper:

  • “Expose him.”

  • “Discredit her.”

  • “Undermine their efforts.”

And before you know it — envy breeds zulm (oppression), suhriyyah (mockery), and even tahazzub (splitting the ranks).

But what does envy really mean?

It means you’re not just upset about your qadr —

You’re questioning Allāh’s wisdom in giving someone else something He didn’t give you.

The Shayṭān was the first to envy. He envied Ādam — and it led him to kufr.

So if you feel it — kill it.

Don’t feed it. Don’t justify it. Don’t act on it.

  • Make duʿāʾ for the one you envy.

  • Thank Allāh for your own blessings.

  • Remind yourself: “That success is a test — just like mine is.”

May Allāh cleanse our hearts from envy and fill them with love for His decree and joy at the blessings of others.
