Is Giving to Charity Better Than ʿUmrah?
Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:
When the blessed month of Ramaḍān begins, many people travel to Makkah with their families and stay there for the entire holy month. I heard from one of the brothers that you, O noble Shaykh, are of the opinion that giving the costs of ʿUmrah in charity is better than actually performing it. Is this correct? And if it is, do you have any advice for those who travel there every year, to the point that it has become, for some, a matter of pride and boasting?
Shaykh Ibn Baz Answer:
What you mentioned is not correct, and such a statement has not been issued by me. The correct view is that performing Ḥajj and ʿUmrah is better than giving their costs in charity, for the one who sincerely intends it for the sake of Allah and performs the rituals in accordance with the prescribed Sharīʿah. It has been authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said:
“One ʿUmrah to the next is an expiation for what is between them, and an accepted Ḥajj has no reward except Paradise.”
[Agreed upon — al-Bukhārī and Muslim]
He ﷺ also said:
“ʿUmrah in Ramaḍān is equivalent to Ḥajj.”
[Also agreed upon — al-Bukhārī and Muslim]
And Allah is the One who grants success.
