Obey the Rulers — Even If They Are Wicked? Yes. That’s the Sunnah
Many today are quick to revile, rebel, and call for the overthrow of Muslim rulers.
They say, “We’re only speaking against injustice.”
But what does the Prophet ﷺ say?
“Do not revile your rulers, do not employ trickery against them, and do not hate them. And fear Allāh and be patient — for indeed the affair is near (i.e. the Hour).”
[Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in As-Sunnah 2/474 — authenticated by Shaykh al-Albānī]
The Companions asked not about righteous leaders — but about wicked ones.
And even then, the Prophet ﷺ didn’t say “rebel” or “expose them on social media”.
He said:
“Fear Allāh, and hear and obey.”
[Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in As-Sunnah 2/494 — ṣaḥīḥ]
This is not silence upon evil.
This is obedience rooted in Sharīʿah — to prevent greater evil, bloodshed, and chaos.
The Khawārij hated the rulers.
They reviled them.
They fought them — and they ended up becoming the dogs of Hellfire.
The Salafi path is clear:
Obey the Muslim ruler — even if he is sinful.
Be patient. Make duʿā’. Advise privately.
Never fall into rebellion, demonstrations, or inciting the masses.
This is the Sunnah. This is the safety of the Ummah.
