Ruling on Using Cologne That Contains Alcohol (Khamr-Based Perfumes)

Question to Shaykh Ibn Baaz:

Is it permissible to use fragrant substances known as “cologne” which contain alcohol?

Shaykh Ibn Baz Answer:

Using fragrant substances known as cologne that contain alcohol is not permissible, because it has been established for us—based on the statements of medical experts—that it is intoxicating due to the presence of the well-known substance spiritus (ethyl alcohol). Based on that, it is prohibited for both men and women to use it.

As for wudu’, it is not invalidated by it. But as for the validity of the prayer, then that is a matter of consideration, because the majority of scholars hold that intoxicants are najis (impure), and they say that if someone prays while knowingly and deliberately having najāsah on him, his prayer is not valid.

However, some scholars have held that intoxicants are not najis.

Therefore, if a person prayed while cologne was on his clothing or part of his body, but he forgot, or was ignorant of its ruling, or believed it to be pure, then his prayer is valid.

The safer and more precautionary opinion is to wash whatever part of the body or clothing it touched, in order to avoid the difference of opinion among the scholars.

If there exists a type of cologne that does not intoxicate, then its use is not prohibited, because the ruling revolves around the presence or absence of the cause (intoxication).

And Allah is the Granter of success.
